Snow nets

 Snow nets have always been used as an active defence system to contrast the issue of avalanches.  Artigiana Costruzioni’s snow nets are built in accordance with the provisions contained in “Instructions for the erection of avalanche protection structures in avalanche starting zones” – issued by the Swiss Federal Office for the Study on Snow and Avalanches in Davos.
Snow nets are used to prevent the breaking away and consequential sliding off of unstable banked-up snow, through the creation of a snow capture and containment area capable of increasing its stability against the force of gravity.  The banks of rows generally develop in sections of no more than 50-60 m in length to allow for the free movement of men and wild animals, while blending with the morphological characteristics of the installation slope.

Main structural characteristics

  • SUPPORT STRUCTURE for the capture and/or containment component, consisting of intermediate and outer steel tubular uprights of a height adequate to the working of the capture barriers and linked to the ground foundation through a universal joint;
  • CAPTURE AND/OR CONTAINMENT STRUCTURE; this comprises triangular nets of suitable size in 8mm diameter galvanized steel rope, woven diagonally, with 200x200mm mesh and knots covered by a boss and 18mm diameter 7x19 perimeter rope , with ‘fused’ thimble at the lower corners (panel type A) and to the top corner (panel type B), linked to the uprights through an existing eye on the panel and to the upslope ground anchors with 4 turns of 18mm diameter galvanized steel rope fastened by 4+4 galvanized clamps; backup containment net of the double twisted type, 80x100mm mesh, with individual 3.00mm diameter galvanized steel wire;
  • LINKING STRUCTURE; this comprises downslope and side steel ropes of suitable size in order to deliver the stress loads to the foundation structures;
  • GROUND FOUNDATION; this comprises upslope/side and downslope anchorage points in double twisted spiroid rope and steel micropiles set under each upright, of suitable size for the transfer of the load stresses from captured snow to ground anchorage.

Snow bridges

Snow bridges, both in timber and in metal sections, have always been used as an active defence measure to contrast the danger of avalanches.  Artigiana Costruzioni’s snow bridges are built in accordance with the provisions contained in “Instructions for the erection of avalanche protection structures in avalanche starting zones” – issued by the Swiss Federal Office for the Study on Snow and Avalanches in Davos.
The snow bridges are laid to prevent the breaking away and consequential downslope sliding of unstable banked-up snow, through the creation of a snow capture and containment area capable of increasing its stability against the force of gravity.  The banks of rows generally develop in sections of no more than 50-60 m in length to allow for the free movement of men and wild animals, while blending with the morphological characteristics of the installation slope.

Characteristics of the materials:

  • SUPPORT STRUCTURE for the capture and/or containment component, consisting of open section steel beam of a height adequate to the working of the capture barriers and rigidly linked to the ground foundation;
  • CAPTURE AND/OR CONTAINMENT STRUCTURE  consisting of Omega-section steel sheet horizontal sections suitably blocked to the support structure through bolting, possibly connected to the backup containment net, double-twisted type, 80x100mm mesh, with 3.00 mm diameter galvanized steel individual wire;
  • LINKING STRUCTURE consisting of open section steel beams sized to withstand the compressive loads caused by the weight of snow held in its containment structure; the struts are the telescopic type to aid fitting operations, while ensuring the structure’s optimum geometric configuration;
  • GROUND FOUNDATION, consisting of four steel micropiles for each unit, sized to withstand the loads caused by captured snow and based on the mechanical characteristics of the foundation ground.

“Snow bridge” models available:

  • Dk = 3,00
  • Dk = 3,50
